Tim Louris is a co-founder and shareholder attorney with Louris Marshall O’Brien, P.A. Tim’s entire legal career has consisted of legal advocacy on behalf of employees and labor unions—always with the goal of exercising and building worker power. Whether at the bargaining table or in the courtroom, Tim works to advance his clients’ interests through a proactive and strategic approach in partnership with his client.

Although lawsuits are best avoided, Tim has successfully litigated numerous cases on behalf of scores of clients, including complex class and collective action lawsuits, discrimination charges at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (“EEOC”) and the Minnesota Department of Human Rights (“MDHR”), wage-and-hour litigation, non-competes and other contract disputes, and arbitrations of all types across virtually all industries.

Over the years, Tim has helped his clients achieve significant results in numerous noteworthy cases, including:

  • After an employee lost his disability discrimination case in an arbitration, Tim represented him in federal court and achieved one of the largest public-sector discrimination settlements in Minnesota history.
  • After discovering that a bankrupt mining company had illegally underpaid its employees for years, Tim—along with Emily Marshall and Bill O’Brien—filed a federal lawsuit against the company’s individual owners and won a court-approved settlement that included full backpay to all employees for their unpaid wages.
  • Between 2015 and 2020, Tim represented an employee who was unlawfully fired by his employer three times, and Tim helped him win orders for reinstatement all three times along with hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost wages, overtime, and benefits.
  • In retaliation against a union that had started picketing for unpaid wages and benefits, an employer filed a lawsuit baselessly accusing the union of defamation and illegal picketing. Tim represented the union and not only achieved dismissal of all claims, but then also obtained orders requiring the employer to pay its employees all amounts owed and the union’s attorney fees for defending against the employer’s baseless legal claims.

Tim is a frequent lecturer on cutting-edge developments in both state and federal labor and employment laws.

Tim graduated cum laude from the University of Minnesota Law School in 2010 with a concentration in Labor and Employment Law. During law school, Tim served as Managing Editor of the ABA Journal of Labor & Employment Law, Associate Editor of the Journal of Law and Inequality, and he received the Helen I. Kelly Award for the Best Student Article for Volume 28 of the Journal of Law and Inequality.
